WELCOME TO MENTOURING OUR BROTHERS

MenTouring Our Brothers, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization committed to preventing young minority males from entering the juvenile and criminal justice systems and supporting those who are transitioning from the systems by equipping and empowering them through “mentouring” relationships, educational and enrichment programs, and employment.

OUR APPROACH

In working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system, we have found that many services are offered almost too late.  Youth need to be reached much earlier to help prevent their entrance into the judicial system.

76% of Black youth

In Mecklenburg County complaints for Black youth reached 76% in 2015 despite Black youth accounting for less than 32% of the county’s age 6-15 population. A significant body of research demonstrates that while children of color are over represented in the justice system, they are not committing crimes or delinquent acts at higher rates than their White peers.

64% vs. 29%

While 2010 Census data showed Blacks and Latinos made up only about 29% of the U.S. population, the Bureau of Justice reported that in mid-2009, they made up almost 64% of the incarcerated population.

76.6% of released prisoners were rearrested

A 2005-2010 study, tracking 404,638 prisoners in 30 states after their release found that 76.6% of released prisoners were rearrested.
